“Why do I need to adjust to my glasses? My eyesight should be perfect! The optometrist must have made a mistake.” This statement indicates a lack of understanding of the vision system.
Vision is one of our primary senses. It is how we perceive or see the world through our eyes. Our awareness of t...

Do your feel eyestrain even with your new glasses? Does it seem difficult to concentrate when working? It might be that your eyes are not working efficiently with each other. It’s similar to the wheels of your car being out of alignment. Your car drives forward but it is not easy to steer. To sol...

Modern technology, in solving old-world problems often leads to other new-world problems. A ‘glaring’ example of this is with heads-up displays in modern vehicles. Polarised sunglasses, once considered the best sunglasses in the world, often interfere with the virtual image created by most heads-...

The question which contact lens wearers often ask is: “Why should I replace my disposable contact lenses before they become uncomfortable?” That’s similar to only brushing your teeth once you have a sore tooth. By the time your body tells you that you need to take action, it’s often too late. Dis...

The visual system can be compared to the root system of a tree.
If the tree was stunted at growth, the root system will be weak and the tree will not grow to reach its full potential.
Similarly, in a “lazy” or amblyopic eye, the root or neural system at the back of the eye is underdevel...

In South Africa, a person suffering from Keratoconus may wait up to 10 years for a cornea to become available for a transplant. Support organ donation. Contact the Eye Bank to give the gift of sight.

How many times do you think that I, as an optometrist, have heard that starting to wear glasses can make your eyes weaker? This is like saying that starting to wear shoes can make your feet bigger. Spectacles, like shoes, allow one to function comfortably, without being the cause of any change.

Prior to cataract surgery, one is often offered a “premium” multifocal intra-ocular lens (IOL) implant by the eye surgeon. The quality of vision one often achieves with this type of IOL is a similar quality of vision one achieves when looking into a clear pond after throwing a pebble into the pon...

Saben Spectacle is a company that I would recommend to the whole world. Michael Saben, Lucille and Bonnie, they are outstanding people with passion. My 2 boys have been helped by this company and we are pleased to say that this company helped us in many ways. Payment arrangements was made and to top it up Michael will always send a message to ask how are the boys doing and are they comfortable with the hard contact lenses as both of them has keratoconus, not sure if I spelled it correctly. Both boys contact lens was chipped and thid company Saben spectacle sorts it out within less than a week. Tells that they are compasionate about their work, staff and customers. They always let you feel at home.

I have been a client of Saben Spectacle Co. for over 20 years and I will keep on going back to them because they are not only professional but they are kind and welcoming. Everytime I walk in I'm treated with such warmth, respect and kindness. They care about ALL their clients. At one time the spectacles I needed were more than I could afford and they bent over backwards to try and find an alternate solution! Absolutely brilliant service.

My Approach

Vision is not simply about seeing clearly with each eye. It is much more than that. It's about seeing comfortably. It's about your optometrist fine tuning your spectacle or contact lens prescription, so that you can adapt to the visual change as easily as possible. It's about understanding that the modern work environment involves complex visual tasks. It's not just reading a document on the desk in front of you. It's looking at multiple computer screens, laptop and cellphone screens in the same space. Your vision correction needs to work for you even with all of this. Only an optometrist with years of experience and a deep understanding of human interaction with our environment, and a thorough knowledge of corrective lens technology will result in you achieving clear comfortable vision.
